Stop Trump’s HUD Cuts!

NO TRUMP OR CITY CUTS TO AFFORDABLE HOUSING!
Rally and March April 27 @ Noon
Federal Building, 450 Golden Gate

This action is part of a national week of actions to stop Trump’s $6.2 billion cuts to HUD. HRCSF will be launching a postcard campaign this week. We’ll be gathering signed postcards to deliver to congress people who we’ll push to vote NO on these cuts. Stay tuned!

Details about the kickoff action:

On April 27, neighborhood, labor, and faith organizations from across San Francisco are uniting to protest proposals by President Trump and City officials to cut back affordable housing programs in one of the nation’s least affordable cities.

The Trump cuts to federal housing programs would impose deep reductions in repairs to public housing, rental assistance to low income families and seniors, and basic community services.   More than $6 billion in national cuts to the HUD budget would result in an estimated $39 million loss for San Francisco’s most vulnerable populations.

Meanwhile a proposal by Supervisors Safai, Breed, and Tang will raise rents and cut the percentage of affordable housing units that developers are required to build. Last June voters approved Prop C requiring developers build 25% affordable. The Supervisors’ proposal would reduce the share of affordable housing to 18%.   The sponsors claim this change is a ‘win’ for middle income workers because the legislation would impose all the cuts on lower income workers and families. But the real winners are real estate developers who will gain more than $60 million annually in rent hikes and reduced affordable housing obligations at today’s development levels.

The April 27th protest occurs as the City’s Planning Commission is scheduled to vote on the proposed reductions to affordable housing requirements and an alternative that will maintain higher levels of affordability by Supervisors Kim and Peskin. Protests against the proposed federal cut backs are occurring nationwide throughout the week.
