Counseling Hours

Monday through Thursday
1-5pm, call or drop-in at

417 South Van Ness/15th, 415-703-8644

Please note that our counseling service is closed from Dec. 24 until Jan. 1. It will be open again on Jan. 2 at 1pm.

We offer peer counseling for tenants living in San Francisco at our office or via telephone four days a week (see schedule above). When you come in, it is helpful (but not required) that you bring the following documents (we will make copies so you can keep your original):

Your lease (if you have more than one, bring them all). If you do not have a written lease, bring rent receipts or cancelled checks.

All letters, notes and emails you have received from the landlord, property manager or anyone else acting for the landlord (such as a contractor) arranged in order, from oldest date to most current (chronological order).

All correspondence you've sent to the landlord or anyone else acting for the landlord, in chronological order.

All court papers or documents from the Rent Board, in chronological order.

All documents from any governmental agency, such as the Department of Public Health and the Department of Building Inspection.

If payment of rent is being disputed, bring receipts or cancelled checks.

If property conditions are at issue, bring photos.

If relevant, all documents from the Housing Authority or pertaining to a housing voucher.

In all cases, bring proof of income (any documents which show your income).

AT THIS TIME WE CANNOT ACCEPT EMAIL QUESTIONS. We will resume accepting emails after January 1, 2013.

Counseling is available at the office in Cantonese, Spanish, sometimes Russian (check with us about availability), and English.

Our office is accessible by MUNI/BART. Buses that come within walking distance of our office include: 33, 22, 14, 49, and 12. If you take BART, get off at 16th & Mission and walk a block.

We do help tenants living in Section 8 units and public housing. There is also a Public Housing/ Section 8 Renters Rights Line (for legal help): 415-354-6353.

If you'd like to be a tenants rights counselor, please give us a call at 415-703-8634, ask for Tommi or Stephanie.
