Self Help Tenant’s Rights

This information is directed to San Francisco tenants in Rent Controlled housing (see here to see if this applies to you, but a good shortcut is if your building was built before 1979) and who live in Market Rate apartments.

If you live outside of San Francisco, please visit Tenants Together to get information that applies to your housing.

If you live in HUD housing (Public Housing, SFHA Housing, RAD, Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH), HopeVI or HOPESF) or you have a Housing Voucher (Section 8, VASH, HOPWA, EHV, Housing Choice Voucher- HCV), this information will not apply to you. Get HUD Tenant’s Rights Counseling here.

Counseling

Our counseling team can be very helpful in providing information, answering questions, and suggesting action to address your issues. Here’s how you can access a counselor. However, we have limited clinic hours, availability and time to spend on each case, so it may be helpful for you to read up on an issue and see if you may find the answers you need here.

You will also find that our link to many useful resources, more information, other agencies and laws and regulations to be helpful as well.
