Self Help Tenant’s Rights

This information is directed to San Francisco tenants in Rent Controlled housing (see here to see if this applies to you, but a good shortcut is if your building was built before 1979) and Market Rate apartments.

If you live outside of San Francisco, please visit Tenants Together to get information that applies to your housing.

If you live in Affordable Housing or have a Housing Voucher (Section 8, Public Housing (SFHA), RAD, Tax Credit (LIHTC), Below Market Rate (BMR), HUD Subsidized, Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH), Housing Choice Voucher, VASH, HOPWA, LOSP, Care not Cash, Rapid Re-Housing or get rent assistance from the City, the Housing Authority, HUD or Our Trans Home, Senior Operating Subsidy, Flexible Housing Subsidy Pool or other agency) this information will not apply to you. Counseling

Our counseling team can be very helpful in providing information, answering questions, and suggesting action to address your issues. Here’s how you can access a counselor. However, we have limited clinic hours, availability and time to spend on each case, so it may be helpful for you to read up on an issue and see if you may find the answers you need here.

You will also find that our link to many useful resources, more information, other agencies and laws and regulations to be helpful as well.
